The Global Power Development Index 2026 was released during a thematic session on the Global Energy Interconnection at the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development held at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The report evaluates the power development levels of 100 countries across four dimensions: supply security, consumption services, green and low-carbon performance, and technology innovation. Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, China, and Norway ranked in the top five for comprehensive development.
China's performance in the power sector stands out. The report indicates that China ranks first globally in power technology innovation capability, while also leading the world in total clean energy installed capacity and the application of digital and smart power technologies.
The event was jointly organized by the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization, the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
In his remarks, Lock Tapa, President of the UN Economic and Social Council, suggested that the world should increase investment in green energy infrastructure in developing countries, promote technology sharing for all, and adhere to a fairness-oriented approach to build a resilient and inclusive global energy transition path.
UN Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua stated that energy is the foundation of sustainable development, and countries need to accelerate energy technology innovation and grid interconnection, provide policy and technical assistance to developing countries, and deepen cross-sectoral multilateral partnerships to achieve a fair and inclusive energy transition.
Fu Cong, China's Permanent Representative to the UN, proposed that the international community should accelerate the energy transition under current circumstances, including strengthening technological support and deepening technical cooperation, promoting technology application for inclusive empowerment, cultivating green production and lifestyle, and improving global energy governance to jointly safeguard energy security.
