The Tokyo Metropolitan Government plans to bring a New York University campus to its jurisdiction. Governor Yuriko Koike visited NYU on July 14 local time in the U.S. and entered into an agreement with the university's vice chancellor. The agreement covers discussions on expanding the 'StudyAwayProgram' and conducting regular academic research exchanges.
Musashimurayama City has been identified as the candidate location for the new campus. The city is expected to see an extension of the Tama Monorail in the mid-2030s. Koike stated that the campus construction is hoped to 'proceed in parallel' with the monorail extension. She emphasized the effort aims to foster international human resources.
New York University is a prestigious private institution founded in 1831, consistently ranking high in major global university league tables. Besides its main campus in New York, it currently operates branch campuses in Shanghai, China, and Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Prior to visiting NYU, Koike met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at UN headquarters.
